Post #10: Do you feel that you see too many suggested posts in your News Feeds?

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but Facebook advertising has rapidly increased. My newsfeed now consists of strange promoted upcoming events, ‘most shared’ posts from the businesses I do follow, and endless business page suggestions from companies I’ve never even heard of – something has happened, and people are noticing.

These days when a friend likes a business, it shows up as a full on post ‘Tom likes Business Page x’ sprawled across your page. These adverts are getting to people, there are too many of them. Yet businesses love the new Facebook advertising options Otherwise why would Facebook be doing all of these intrusive changes?

It’s clear that because these Facebook advertising are working, Facebook wants to make more of them. They want a diverse range of ads to suit all people, all budgets, across the world. That’s how they will increase their revenue. As ads become more social, they are also becoming more interactive and engaging.

Richard Greenfield, a media and entertainment analyst for BTIG Partners says that he wasn’t a fan of the suggested posts that users have seen in News Feeds, which are targeted based on demographics and Web activity, rather than what the user has done on Facebook. He then commends that: It’s just what Yahoo does. That’s just what AOL does. What makes Facebook special was supposed to be the data on social. Instead, they’re reverting back to what all of the other websites do … It just makes Facebook a lot less special, and it probably deserves a lot less of a premium multiple, because that data just isn’t as good as you thought it was. It’s looking less and less like Facebook and more and more like “Spambook.” You’re seeing ads that just don’t seem terribly relevant to the target audience.

So, do you think Facebook advertising has gone too far? Will this spam-like advertising campaign lessen the time you spend on Facebook? Do you think Facebook has a promising future?

  1. In my opinion, Facebook will be Facebook. I feel like Facebook is going more towards the older generations and some people are getting laid off. It's helping them find out more about businesses or from my perspective, Facebook knows that I'm always shopping online and it always has super cute shoes or some cute outfit on the side that intrigues me and I click on it. It is really annoying, but it's working. If their is something on their that is going to strike your attention, then people will click on it. I think Facebook has a promising future until something else comes along (just like Facebook knocked out Myspace).

  2. I do not like the amount of posts we have from businesses he have not liked, or TV shows but it is hard for me to complain about a site that we use for free (financially speaking anyway). I think Facebook has a very promising future but they need to stay vigilant. I also thought myspace had a future and well we saw how that worked out.

    1. Yes, I agree that we can't complain much about Facebook since we use it for free. But I think Facebook should also be cautious about users' experience because what Facebook is doing, pushing too many ads on screen, is actually harming the loyalty of users.

  3. I think Facebook advertising is very effective. I believe that to market in the area that everyone is present on is the smartest way. Some people do not pay attention to these Ads but at the same time some people take advantage of the Facebook only promotions. I think Facebook does not have a promising future just because everyone will become annoyed with the Ads they see on Facebook. Great article!

  4. Great thought! Personally speaking, i don't like those ads on Facebook at all. I think social websites should be more like a place for friends to communicate with each other. I believe the private-like environment is the key for facebook's success. Honestly i barely use facebook anymore because those ads are just so annoying! Sometimes i can only see 3 posts from friends in one page!

  6. Honestly, sometimes I will not even like a page just because I do not want all my friends seeing that I liked a page with engagement rings when I am not even close to being engaged! Recently Facebook has contacted my work trying to get us to purchase advertising rights for about $1500. So, the people that choose this route are spending a pretty penny and Facebook is easily making profit. It is a free service for people to use - they have to make their money somehow!

  7. There are many ads on Facebook and some can be helpful to others who might be interested in that advertisement. while it could get on some peoples nerves with ads on their newsfeed.

  8. Well I sort of have mixed views when it comes to advertising on Facebook. I get easily annoyed with all of the ads (both on the sidebars and while scrolling through my news feed) but then find myself clicking on a decent amount of them to look at the featured content...
It still is just crazy to me that companies are able to directly target their market audiences through the user's click streams. I got engaged this February and literally the NEXT day I was getting ads for wedding ring companies and venue locations.

    2. They can react to our clicks and searches shorter than one day, like recently, I searched Disney in Google to book tickets, then I saw almost all websites I went to has a Disney ads in the sidebars or popping-ups at the afternoon of the same day. That's a new marketing method, called Behavioral-based Marketing. It's really amazing, our group will talk more details about it in our presentation.

  9. It is so annoying to see these advertisements on Facebook! I remember when it was so simple to just log on and interact with your friends and nothing popping up that I didn't want to see. Sure some of the suggestions are relevant but most likely its just a flood of ads that do not pertain to whats going on in my Facebook world.

    1. I'm sorry you are so annoyed by Facebook ads. Many people has the same feeling with you, it's like we have no choice but put up with. let me ask you question, would you switch to another social network that has similar functions to Facebook but fewer ads; however most of your friends are on Facebook?

  10. In my opinion, I think Facebook advertising has become very effective, and one of the best ways to get customer’s attention. A big percentage of the population have a Facebook account, it is the biggest social media site, that’s why most businesses advertises their products or services on this site. Facebook Advertising is known as “Social Media Marketing”, and as we all know, Social Media Marketing has become a significant marketing force, and a strong relationship built on communication between companies, brands, and consumers.

  11. At first, I used to be so annoyed by all those advertisement messages on my Facebook wall. However, I recently received some suggestions to shop online, and I think some of the products I bought were a good deal!!! Advertising on Facebook is here to stay!!

  12. I think there are too many ads on facebook. The annoying part is about facebook ads is that most of them look like friendly suggestions, almost as if a friend is saying "hey support this with me." I wish ads did not use people on your friends list to bait you into clicking the links. Nice article!

  13. Interesting blog post and totally agree with you that Facebook has definitely increased their ads a lot recently. Everytime I get on and look at my news feed I want to say at least 60-70 percent of it is advertising ads or thing a of pages I've liked. That's just crazy but very smart of Facebook.

  14. I wonder if the increase in ads has anything to do with the holiday season. Companies are ramping up marketing in all fields including billboards, newspapers, and social media. The holiday season is a perfect time to attract new customers instead of focusing on customer loyalty. That would also explain why people are seeing ads that don't seem to relate to him or her. If you've visited a website multiple times or liked a business page then you're obviously a pre-existing customer. During gift-giving season businesses need to reach into their un-tapped markets which Facebook graciously provides a link to.
